Vajrayogini Meditation

Learn the meditations of the Vajrayogini generation and completion stages in this weekly session guided by one of the world’s leading authorities on this practice, the teacher Venerable Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden.The opportunity to practise the powerful methods of the Vajrayogini tantra is rare and precious. The chance to receive instruction in this practice from a teacher as qualified as Geshe-la is extraordinarily valuable.

In these sessions Geshe Lodcen explains the methods of Vajrayana in general and provides detailed instructions on the meditation methods of Vajrayogini tantra. Each session includes recitation of the Vajrayogini sadhana and performance of the Wheel of Offering (tsog).

The Vajrayogini tantra is distinguished as a system that gathers all Dharma instructions into a method that is most easy to practise and brings attainments quickly and easily.

To be able to attend these teachings you must have received the Vajrayogini empowerment. This tantra is part of Highest Yoga Tantra and is regarded as providing the most rapid methods for developing realisations. Understanding and being successful in this method requires a strong foundation in the Path to Enlightenment teachings of renunciation of samsara, the mind of enlightenment aspiration to benefit all beings and the perfect view of the nature of reality as expressed by the middle way.

Vajrayogini classes are based on the book by Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden, Path to the Union of Clear Light and Illusory Body.

This series of classes will cover:
  • 1: An explanation of Highest Yoga Tantra in general
  • 2: An introduction to the mother tantra practice of Vajrayogini
  • 3: Detailed explanations on the 11 generation stages of Vajrayogini and guided meditations associated with each stage
  • 4: A detailed explanation of the most subtle body mandala unique to Vajrayogini and guided meditation practice
  • 5: Clear and precise explanation of the Vajrayogini completion stage and guided meditations
  • 6: An explanation of the sadhana and associated practices such as mudras

During these classes you can gain:
  • 1: An understanding of the vajrayana system and the unique features of mother tantra and Vajrayogini
  • 2: The ability to perform the brief Vajrayogini sadhana
  • 3: An understanding of the 11 generation stages and the ability to perform meditation on each of the stages
  • 4: Knowledge and ability to perform the mantra practice of Vajrayogini
  • 5: An ability to practise at home and to develop your own practice
  • 6: An understanding of the completion stage including precise definitions of the stages and their sequence

The Venerable Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden leads these sessions. He is author of the authoritative book on the Vajrayogini, Path to the Union of Clear Light and Illusory Body. He completed a Geshe Lharam degree as equal highest in his class at Serajey Monastic University. He has a Master’s degree in Vajrayana Buddhism after six years at Gyumay Tantric College and a Master’s degree from Varanasi Sanskrit University.

Classes are held each Monday at 7.30 to 9.00pm. A new series starts in March and finishes in December and suitably qualified students are welcome to attend any time. Each class includes sadhana practice, Wheel of Offering (tsog) practice, instructions and guided meditation in the traditional Tibetan temple, followed by supper. There is a facility charge of $10, with proceeds going to support the temple.

You should wear loose fitting comfortable and warm clothing. Seating is available in chairs or on meditation cushions. Classes are held on Mondays except for public holidays during the year. Classes are not held during the annual retreat period in late September/early October. Please enquire at the Centre for more details.

In addition to weekly practice, each second year the Tibetan Buddhist Society holds a three week Vajrayogini retreat. During the retreat we complete the mantra commitments, and the retreat concludes with the traditional fire puja. Geshe-la gives Vajrayogini empowerment each year before the September-October retreat.
