Essence of the Path to Enlightenment

In just 350 pages Essence of the Path to Enlightenment offers a comprehensive explanation of the key concepts of Tibetan Buddhism and completes the popular path to enlightenment series. The great Tibetan lama, Je Tsong Khapa, was renowned for his skill in preparing extensive, middling and condensed presentations of the core Buddhist lam.rim, or stages of the path, teachings. Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden’s three path to enlightenment volumes now bring this tradition to Western readers.

Essence of the Path to Enlightenment provides a clear and straightforward introduction to the lam.rim teachings, explaining in a series of practical steps the methods that can be used by anyone, whatever their situation, to follow the path to enlightenment. For readers familiar with the other volumes in the series, Essence also offers new material, including an explanation of the 12 deeds of a Buddha; a description of the 32 major signs and 80 minor marks of the Buddha’s complete enjoyment body; and an explanation of the six clairvoyances.

Original translations are also included of the five verses from Maitreya’s Ornament for Clear Realisation showing the 32 major signs and the eleven verses explaining the 80 minor marks. An explanation of the causes of the signs is taken from Haribhadra’s Clear Meaning Commentary, with definitions by Sera Jetsun Chokyi Gyal Tsan. The key verses from Maitreya’s Sublime Continuum of the Mahayana discussing the twelve deeds of a Buddha are presented as are Nagarjuna’s verses from Precious Garland of Advice to a King which explain the causes of the six clairvoyances.

This book is destined to become one of the most popular introductory texts on Tibetan Buddhism published in the West.
