Buddhist Discussion Group
Saturdays from 7.30 to 9.00pm
Reading for this week - 10th July: Page 539 (Remembering Kindness) up to Great Love on page 545
Outline for this week - 10th July: (b) How to develop bodhichitta (page 929) to 2' The stages of training the mind in bodhichitta (page 930)
For an alternative Saturday night out, join fellow Dharma students in a friendly and informal discussion on Path to Enlightenment in
Tibetan Buddhism by Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden. This text distils, from the vast Buddhist canon, the most essential and practical
instructions on how to train the mind towards enlightenment. These are then presented in a graded form to allow for a natural
progression from simpler to more advanced teachings.
The sessions are structured to encourage questions, debate and the sharing of interpretation and examples related to that week’s
subject matter. Also there is an opportunity to memorise the outline and verses for those who wish to. Typically four pages of
text are covered each week.
Attendees have remarked how motivating this group is, in encouraging them to pick up the book through the week, perhaps memorise a
verse or two, and to think about the teachings more deeply. Through the discussions it becomes clear that there are a great many
different ways of understanding the same subject matter. Some people see the truth of the teachings reflected in world affairs,
others through their work or family relationships, or even in their own behaviour. Naturally these different perspectives lead to
much debate, and also enhance one’s own understanding of the subject.
Whether you prefer to actively engage in the discussions, or rather sit and listen, all are welcome. After the discussion an
opportunity for a more informal chat over supper. There is no charge for this class. For further information please contact
Ven. Tim McKibben at the Centre.
