About - Tibetan Buddhist Society

The renowned Tibetan Buddhist master, meditator and scholar, Venerable Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden, now 85, founded the Tibetan Buddhist Society in Australia in 1979, with centres established in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Geshe Loden first came to Australia in 1976 and has since presented courses on Tibetan Buddhism to thousands of students, including subjects previously never taught in Australia.

Peaceful Land of Joy Meditation Centre

A magnificent property was bought in Melbourne in 1989, under the guidance of Geshe Loden, to provide a secure and enduring centre of Tibetan Buddhist learning.

The Tibetan Buddhist Society’s Melbourne property, the Peaceful Land of Joy Meditation Centre, is a beautiful, tranquil ten acre haven, with 2300 rose bushes in 400 varieties, 2500 trees, flowering courtyards and lake and bird life.

A magnificent traditional holy Tibetan temple, unique in the Southern hemisphere, was completed in 2000 and all classes are held here. His Holiness the Dalai Lama blessed the temple on 23 May 2002, describing it as a place for continuing study and practice of the rich Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, psychology and meditations.

The property includes excellent facilities for classes and annual retreats, a beautiful garden and residential facilities for eight ordained and a number of dedicated lay students.

Under Geshe Loden’s guidance and energetic example, the Society’s students have endeavoured to deliver a comprehensive programme of activity and ensure the Peaceful Land of Joy is a peaceful haven that everyone can enjoy.

Activities at the Society’s main Melbourne centre include:

  • Five classes and discussion group each week.
  • Retreats for concentrated periods of meditation and study.
  • Book publishing through Tushita Publications, established by Geshe Loden to present the profound Tibetan Buddhist teachings in English for people interested in Tibetan Buddhism in the West.
  • The annual Tibetan New Year Festival in February/March and Buddhist Spring Festival in November.
  • Rose Garden Open Weekends in spring and autumn each year.
  • Community fundraising to help alleviate suffering caused by natural disasters or personal tragedy.
