Visit a place of rare peace and beauty and a treat for garden lovers. Enjoy a gentle outing with your family and friends with fine foods from our outdoor café, or bring your own picnic.

Take the opportunity to learn about:

  1. Organic and water wise gardening from our resident rose growing expert, Venerable Tim McKibben
  2. The features of a traditional Tibetan temple and Tibetan culture
  3. Meditation for peace and relaxation

The Tibetan Buddhist Society welcomes visitors to the spring Rose Garden Open Days at the Peaceful Land of Joy Meditation Centre gardens on the weekend of 26 and 27 November from 10 am to 4 pm.

The 10 acre gardens are maintained using environmentally sustainable methods. Many magnificent rose bushes in hundreds of varieties have been organically cultivated using recycled water and companion planting.

Lakes, sweeping lawns, sunny courtyards and 2000 trees adorn the property including 37 golden robinias, 23 Californian redwoods, 31 olives, weeping elms, willows and mulberries, cedars, Japanese maples, flowering cherries and blue spruce.

Recent additions to the garden are five varieties of Alyogyne including the brightly coloured West Coast Gem (Satin Hibiscus), a drought tolerant Australian native, as well as Cistus, limonium, hemerocallis and golden bushes.

Thousands of birds of many species also enjoy the environment attracted by the bread and rice fed to them each morning for more than 20 years.

Regular free garden tours include tips on organic gardening, rose pruning, companion planting and water wise gardening. There will also be regular tours of the magnificent traditional Tibetan temple, one of very few of its kind in the Western world, led by Venerable Cathy Evans.

For visitors interested in learning about meditation there will be a free introductory guided meditation each day. Devonshire teas with home-baked scones and strawberry jam are served in our outdoor café, along with home-made soup, savoury scones and cakes and freshly brewed chai.

Browse for gifts with a huge range of products for sale such as silk shawls, bags, jewellery and hand made items. Books on Buddhism and meditation are also available.

Entry is $5. Family rate $10 - parents and school age children or younger. Garden tours and meditation sessions are free. Temple tours are $5. A group rate for 8 or more people including entry, a Devonshire tea and temple tour is $10 per person. For group bookings please call 9333 1770. All proceeds go to the upkeep of the temple.
